SWAN Hill Primary School has appointed its school captains for 2025 with the four student leaders each looking forward to their new role.
Assistant principal Cailie Skinner said the students applied for the school leadership positions to showcase what they are capable of.
“These leaders have chosen to be role models to their peers and develop as public speakers,” she said.
Cooper said he had already developed confidence since being in the role.
“We work with a teacher weekly to prepare for our school assemblies,” he said.
“In this time, we’ve already developed greater confidence in public speaking, organisational skills and been able to connect with different staff and students as we arrange guest speaks for each assembly.”
Mrs Skinner said student leadership is not just about holding a title.
“It’s about fostering growth, responsibility and providing students with unique opportunities to step into leadership roles that will shape their future,” she said.
“Students are given a chance to step out of their comfort zone and develop as leaders with the support of our staff team.”
School captain Lily said she was excited for the opportunities that will arise from the role.
“We are excited for Anzac Day and Remembrance Day where we represent our school and a trip to Bendigo to participate in a leadership conference,” she said.
“We even just had the opportunity to be the voice for a radio advertisement.”
For Ruby, taking a leadership role within her school has been an easy step to take due to the support of teachers.
“I’m proud to be a student at Swan Hill Primary School and we have great teachers,” she said.
“We have a welcoming environment, everyone says hello and respects each other.”
Angus said he was looking forward to extra curriculum activities as school captain.
“We have brilliant opportunities at our school,” he said.
“I look forward to attending our six specialist subjects, extra curriculum events such as grade 5 and 6 sports, learning new things and showcasing them in Inquiry projects.”
Swan Hill Primary offers a vast range of leadership positions to students across all school years, including school captains, house captains, peer mediators, junior school council representatives and environmental leaders of the future.
Mrs Skinner said the role gave students a range of opportunities and a chance to inspire their peers.
“Leadership opportunities at our school give students the chance to collaborate on various projects, offer suggestions and work as part of a team, creating a greater sense of belonging,” she said.
“Beyond the practical aspects of leadership, our student captains act as role models to their fellow students.
“They set an example for their peers by demonstrating respect, responsibility, belonging and commitment, the four school values at Swan Hill Primary.
“Their actions inspire others to get involved, to speak up, and to take pride in their school community.
