MURRAY DOWNS MEN’S

A MEDLAY Stableford was held on Thursday, March 6, with the player of the day C grade winner James Bennett (31) with 39 points.

Second place in C grade went to Peter Roberts (24) with 38 points, while the B grade competition saw Mick Burns (20) take out top spot via a countback over runner up Wayne Such (18), with both players scoring 37 points.

Christy Merrett (13) shot 39 points to win the A grade competition, which was three points more than Dale Smith (12) and his score of 36 points.

Thirty four points was needed to claim a placing, while the nearest the pins were won by Bob Burns (2nd), Wayne Such (5th), Graeme Mathiske (11th) and Mark Warren (15th).

The sun was shining over the course on Saturday, enticing 121 players out for the day.

Troy Gnitecki (11) took advantage of the prime conditions and posted a massive score of 42 points to win the B grade competition and earn himself player of the day honours.

Dave Hogan (10) also shot a great score with 40 points, which was good enough for second in the B grade, with Graham McClellan (11) and his 36 points claiming third on a countback.

In the C grade competition, Harper Wilson (14) took the honours with his 39 points, ahead of John Tripodi (16) in second with 38 points and Riley Daniels (18) with 37 points in third on a countback.

In D grade, Charlie Blake (24) shot 39 points to win on a countback ahead of Jayden Trebilcock (26), with Alistair Ferrier (19) finishing third with 38 points.

Finally in A grade, 2024 golfer of the year Noah Starrs (Scratch) shot 38 points to claim top spot and was followed by Jason Stevens (8) in second with 36 points and Mathew Collins (-1) rounding out the podium with 35 points.

Thirty three points were needed to be in the ball rundown, while the nearest the pins went to Andrew Guy (2nd and 11th), Jake Budde (5th) and Dean Farrell (15th).

Sunday’s medley Stableford competition saw Dion Carmichael (18) shoot an impressive 40 points to win the player of the day and B grade competition, both on a countback over James Beard (21) who had to settle for second.

In the A grade competition, Dean Farrell (17) managed 37 points to beat Andy Graham (-1) who saw his 35 points claim second on a countback.

Thirty one points was enough to claim a placing, while the nearest the pins were won by Dione Heppell (2nd), Shane Ingram (5th) and Barbara Clark (11th).

Some members of Murray Downs also travelled to play in tournaments over the weekend, with Mathew Collins driving to Finley for the Finley Men’s Open and carded a +1 for a score of 73 to finish second in a very competitive field.

A few of our juniors made the journey over to Barham to compete in the Jack Newton Junior Golf – Barham Junior Open and had some top results. Young gun Harper Wilson shot a net 69 to come runner up in the 14-and-under boys competition, as well as runner up in the boys overall nett category.

Another one of our leading juniors in Tara Free also shot 99 to win the overall girls scratch category, with her adjusted net score of a two-under 71 also giving her the honours in the girls overall nett competition.

 


MURRAY DOWNS LADIES

THE greens at the Murray Downs Golf & Country Club have undergone an extreme renovation and as a result, the 46 women who competed on Wednesday played holes 10 through to 18 twice.

The best score of the day was posted by Lois Coady, who matched her 45 handicap with her score, while the runner-up in B grade was Laurel Dewhurst (39) with 38 points.

In the A grade competition, Lisa Brady (29) scored 40 points, with Lynne Bishop (14) and her 38 points the next best.

Mandy McCallum, Carol Wiseman and Judi Lonergan all scored 37 points to lead the ball pool, while the nearest the pin winners were Shelley Wilkins, Kerry Gammon, Judi Lonergan and Chris Warburton.

On Saturday, 29 competitors braved the heat with 21 marker, Marg Moore scoring 37 points to win via a countback ahead of Avis Shipsides and Suzanne Napier.

Sarah Clark (19) scored 36 points to finish fourth, with Sarah also collected a nearest the pin prize, as did Courtney Docking.

The Friday Golden Girls winner was Sheila Beard with 23 points, ahead of Lois Tippett and Dianne Plant, both with 19 points.

Sheila Beard was the Golfer of the Month for February.
