OZFISH is calling on all community to join in a Cleanup Australia Day event at Pental Island, with a focus on strengthening the health of the Little Murray River.
A popular location for camping and fishing, the river is at risk from litter and dumped rubbish that could affect the quality of aquatic life and the natural surroundings.
Every year the not-for-profit organisation OzFish chooses multiple waterways from across the country to rehabilitate and this year it is our very own Little Murray River.
In previous years the cleanup has taken place in neighboring areas such as Nyah and Euston with around 20 people helping to remove micro plastics, rubbish and general waste from their rivers.
OzFish project manager Michelle Slater hopes more people can get involved at the Pental Island cleanup and help protect the river for future generations.
“We are encouraging anyone who is able to give half-an-hour or more out of their day to put their gloves on and give a helping hand,” she said.
“This amazing cause will help create a better-quality environment for wildlife and the waterway.
“By cleaning up waste, we can promote a healthier river system which is beneficial for fish, fauna and people.”
Meeting on the Pental Island side of the bridge, the cleanup will commence on Sunday March 2, at 10am and finish at 12.30pm.
A light lunch as a show of appreciation to helpers will follow
Participants can also begin the cleanup across the bridge on the Swan Hill side of the river.
Equipment such as hessian bags, gloves and high-vis vests will be provided and volunteers are able to bring their own gear if they prefer.
A closed shoe type is recommended as the cleanup will take place in a bush land area where snakes, sharp sticks and rocks are present.
