Supporters back Annuello Public Hall

SUPPORT is growing for Annuello Public Hall to remain a community-held site after its centennial celebration at the weekend.

Organiser Greg Plant hosted community members to enjoy the weekend at the hall, camping from Friday night.

“While it wasn’t a big crowd, it was very social and there was overwhelming support to retain and maintain the hall,” he said.

“We even had a visit from the tractor club on Sunday.”

Mr Plant, his wife and other members of old Annuello farming families have been researching the history of the hall and settlement, trying to learn more about the lives and hardships of their predecessors.

They are also working to retain ownership of the hall, as it is under threat of sale.

In materials distributed by the group working to uncover the history of the old town, the Annuello Pubic Hall is described as a special place, having been built in 1924 by returned soldiers.

“The hall stands as a rare intact example of a solider settlement hall in Victoria, and is a testament to the workmanship and resilience of the people who created and maintained it,” it was stated.

Mr Plant and the team are looking for anyone who has information about the ownership of the hall, as they have found records that suggest it was bought for 20 pounds in the 1930s.Readers are urged to get in contact with journalist Sam James at sjames@theguardian.com.au with any information regarding the Annuello Town Hall. to remain a community-held site after its centennial celebration at the weekend.
