Students gift cubby house to specialist school

STUDENTS at Swan Hill College’s FLO Campus had every reason to smile this week after they made a special delivery to Swan Hill Specialist School.

Following months of hard work, a handmade cubby house was placed on the back of a trailer and transported to its new home at the specialist school.

The generous donation was made possible thanks to the dedicated cohort of Year 10 and 11 students studying VET Building and Construction.

The program is designed to give students the opportunity to gain experience across a number of building trades, providing foundational skills, safety training, and hands-on experience.

Creativity, team building and resilience were put to the test as the students worked together to produce two cubby houses.

Year 10 student Chris Conyers said he enjoyed taking part in the project, working in a team environment and watching the project come to fruition.

“I’m looking forward to delivering the cubby and seeing their faces when we hand over the finished product,” he said.

Fellow student Bailey Haywood said the students spent around three hours a week on the project and were responsible for all aspects of the build, from the planning and design stages to ensuring it met safety standards.

“This is the biggest project we’ve been part of at the school,” Bailey said.

“It’s rewarding to see the finished product.”

As part of the build, students learnt how to install a subfloor, wall framing, roofing and external cladding, while also ensuring safety was a priority when working around hand and power tools.

Year 11 student Aydan Neville said he enjoyed all aspects of building the cubby and said it was great to be able to donate the finished product to students at the specialist school.

“I enjoyed the overall experience of building it,” he said.

Having finished this project, the students are now preparing to complete a fire pit and community garden for the Salvation Army.

“It’s good to be able to make a positive difference within the community,” Aydan said.

“I enjoy the hands-on learning. This would be my favourite subject.”
