Hospital machete attack and four carjackings ends in arrest at Hopetoun

A MACHETE wielding man has sent Swan Hill Hospital into lockdown after allegedly committing multiple carjackings across the district before he was arrested at Hopetoun.

The hospital was sent into lockdown at about 2.40pm Monday afternoon, when it’s alleged the man produced the weapon and damaged the building’s window.

Police responded to a call a short time later after it was reported a man had forced entry to a residence on High Street, where it’s believed nothing was taken.

Following that call, police responded to reports of a carjacking on Purtons Lane where it’s alleged the man threatened the driver of a black Toyota before stealing the vehicle.

The man exited the Toyota at Lake Boga where he allegedly crashed the vehicle, before he stole a blue Toyota Camry and fled the scene – the vehicle later found in Mystic Park.

It’s alleged the man then forced entry into a home on Mystic Park Road East, stealing a Toyota Prado from the property.

The man then led police a pursuit through Quambatook and Nullawil and the rural areas near Hopetoun, before he dumped the vehicle and fled on foot.

He then allegedly stole a gold-coloured Toyota from Manderville Street at Hopetoun, which crashed a short time later with the man fleeing on foot.

The 21-year-old Swan Hill man was arrested in Hopetoun just before 11pm and is currently assisting police with their enquiries.

The man will face Swan Hill Magistrates’ Court at a later date.
