SWAN Hill District Health is gearing up to honour the backbone of healthcare – nurses – on International Nurses Day 2024.

Held annually on May 12, the day commemorates the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale, a pioneer in modern nursing.

This year’s theme, ‘Our Nurses. Our Future. The economic power of care’, highlights the indispensable role nurses play in shaping healthcare perceptions and underscores the need for strategic investment in the nursing profession.

Nursing is the biggest healthcare profession worldwide, with nurses touching every aspect of an individual’s life within the community.

Despite their pivotal role, nurses often face financial constraints and societal undervaluation.

The theme for IND 2024 aims to reshape these perceptions, showcasing how strategic investment in nursing can yield significant economic and societal benefits.

SHDH said the celebration of IND 2024 was an opportunity to express gratitude to its exceptional nursing team.

These nurses embody the organisation’s values of being progressive, compassionate, accountable and inclusive, consistently delivering connected care for the best experience.

SHDH emphasised the critical role nurses played in delivering compassionate care and driving positive health outcomes within the community.

“Despite the challenges they face, nurses remain dedicated to their profession, serving as the backbone of healthcare,” a spokesperson said.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has further highlighted the invaluable contributions of nurses, who have emerged as frontline heroes.

“Their selfless sacrifices and tireless efforts underscore the indispensable nature of nursing in safeguarding public health and well-being.

“The celebration of IND 2024 serves as a poignant reminder of the economic power of care embodied by nurses worldwide.”

SHDH said the day presented an opportunity to recognise and honour the dedication, compassion and resilience of nurses while advocating for the recognition and investment they rightfully deserved.

“Strategic investments in nursing education, workforce development and improved working conditions are essential to ensure a robust healthcare system capable of meeting the evolving needs of communities,” SHDH said.

“As SHDH prepares to mark this special occasion, we reaffirms our commitment to supporting and empowering nurses in their pursuit of excellence.

“Through collaborative efforts and a shared vision of advancing healthcare, SHDH aims to foster a culture of appreciation and recognition for nurses, acknowledging their role as catalysts for positive change.

“IND 2024 serves as a platform to celebrate and honour the invaluable contributions of nurses worldwide.
