MURRAY DOWNS
IN social bowls last week, the winners were John Alderuccio and Mary Johnson. Well done.
The jackpot is mounting, so it’s well worth coming along and winning as a bonus to playing bowls. The members rostered next Thursday, October 3, are Vicki and Ken O’Bree.
The Murray Downs Challenge against Barham will be played at Murray Downs this Sunday. Please arrive at 12.30pm for a 1pm start.
The Murray Downs Classic was played on Tuesday and Wednesday with 96 bowlers in 32 teams participating.
Players from local clubs and from as far as Apollo Bay, Bendigo, Ararat, Mildura, Moama, Cohuna, Barham, Kerang made the event very successful.
The winning team was from Barham, the runner-up was from Ararat, third placegetters were from Cohuna, fourth from Moama and fifth from Bendigo bowls clubs. Well done to Shorty McCaig and Buck Lehmann for their hard work over many months to organise this tournament. Also thank you to umpires Ceil McCaig and Elaine Lawry.
Full results will be in next Friday’s Guardian.
RACECOURSE
THE club held its Marraboor Pharmacy Mixed Fours event, with ladies to skip. It was played in very windy conditions. With only one rink available, organisers could accept only 14 teams. The winners, with three wins and 81 points, were Carol Smith, Norm Smith (Racecourse), Jim Thompson (Swan Hill) and Linda Gordon (Nyah). Runners-up, on countback, was the Murray Downs team of Cecelia McCaig, Kevin Rowe, Garry McCaig and Noelene Weir, with three wins and 78 points.
There was no Jackpot Bowls this week due to weather conditions.

Today is our usual Friday Frolic afternoon with a 10-end game of bowls. An ideal way of keeping up your bowling skills. At the same time, we welcome one and all to this social afternoon, from beginners to the more experienced. End the afternoon by joining the clubhouse activities, happy- hour drinks, hot snacks and Mick’s raffles. The jackpot sits at $141.
Next Friday will be the final Mini Tournament until after the pennant season. This is a day when players may enter their own teams of triples or make a single entry. Entries must be in by 1pm to go in the draw for a 2pm start. $10 per player. Prizemoney per team will be $120 (first), $60 (second), and $30 (third).
Midweek Pennant starts on Tuesday, October 8, and Saturday Pennant on October 12. Players who have have not yet paid their memberships should at the bar before pennant competition starts and receive a fixture book. There are sheets at the club to indicate when unavailable for pennant play. This is of a great help to the selectors.
Some Swan Hill bowlers have recently had success at tournaments and social bowls held at neighbouring clubs.
LAKE BOGA
WEDNESDAY proved that it takes a lot to stop bowlers from playing their sport.
The drizzling rain at social bowls did not deter a strong field.
The winners, with a two-game win and a score of +18, were Laural Dewhurst, Jean Leach and Kane Kendall.
Runners-up, also with a two-game win , were Helen Jobling, Sally Meehan and Leigh Kingsbury with a score of +15.
Pelican Jackpot play last Saturday, with a smaller field of bowlers following the jackpot being claimed the week before, attracted 26 players.
Winners were John McCormack, Helen Jobling and Ray Leach. In second place were Kane Kendall, Graham Borchard and Bones Smith.
The jackpot will be $126 this week.
A reminder to members that we play Kerang at home in a practice match today and names should be put up on the board for the practice match at Cohuna on October 6.
The pennant season is close, so any practice will help.
NYAH DISTRICT
THE weather was great for social bowls on September 17.
Kent Coburn and Alan Lindsay were the winners for our last game before the pennant season starts. Resting touchers were Kent Coburn and L. Maher.

Call Kent Coburn on 0419 094 999, Betty Baily on 0408 493 059, or L. Gordon on 0437 072 465. Hope to see everyone there.
