Swans rise above Kangas

A DOMINANT first quarter has helped Swan Hill secure the Central Murray B-reserve premiership, defeating a gallant Cohuna Kangas 44-40 in Saturday’s grand final.

The four-goal win was set up by an impressive opening 15 minutes, with the Swans outscoring the Kangas by 13 goals to five, forcing Cohuna to play catch-up for the remaining three quarters.

It was a feat that looked on the cards midway through the second, with Kangas goal shooter Grace Jones dragging her team back to within a two-goal margin 11 minutes into the second quarter before Swan Hill responded to push their lead back out to six goals at half-time.

Cohuna again responded after the break, with Jones going on a seven-goal scoring stretch to this time level the scores seven minutes into the third term, before Swan Hill once again found their rhythm to push the margin back out to two goals at three-quarter-time.

Both the Swans and Kangas went goal for goal for the opening 10 minutes, with the premiership anyone’s to grab, before Swan Hill scored five consecutive goals in the dying minutes to open up an unassailable six-goal lead.

Swan Hill goal defence Brooke Bannam claimed best-on-court honours.
