Good gathering for breakfast

WE had almost 100 at a rough guess turn up for our Australia Day breakfast. We had our Council Mayor John Harvie there as well as our ambassador for the day, Gwenda Darling.

Our Mayor spoke well, as did the ambassador. Our three awards for our little town were given out. Alan Fielding took out the Citizen of the Year.

Heath Moloney took out the Sportsperson of the Year. Our old farts in the Moulamein Auto Club took out the Community Group of the Year and Sutto made a very memorable speech as he collected their certificate.

Our Moulamein Fire And Rescue Brigade fed the multitudes and I hope no one went hungry.

Well done to everyone involved. Let’s start working on next year.

Men’s health night

WE are having an educational night at our Moulamein Bowling Club on Saturday, February 15, to point out the bleeding obvious to our men in our district that they have to start looking after themselves.

We are not getting any younger fellers. It will be a bit like the old sportsman’s night, with big names like AFL legends Brian Taylor and Matthew Richardson, as well as other speakers.

Even though it is about men’s mental and physical health, women are encouraged and welcome to attend. Who is going to remind the silly old bugger of what he has been told if it is not his wife, partner or daughter?

This promises to be an entertaining as well as a great information night. All this for only $10, with entry fee getting donated to the Movember charity. There will be a bus running from Barham for a small charge.

If we can get a bit more funding, we may be able to organise a bus from other towns. More information in the coming weeks or ring Courtney on 0429 646 942.

Bowls back

WE were back on the greens again this week. Divi 2 were at home to the other Racecourse side. We were going well and were up at smoko. Then the dreaded cream cakes kicked in and we ended up one rink up, two rinks down. Down overall.

Divi 1 travelled over to Swan Hill and got two rinks up, one down. No cream cakes kicked in over there. This week Divi 1 are at home to Racecourse and Divi 2 are away to top of the table Balranald.

Divi 2 still have a chance of making the four. But we needed to win last week to make it easier to get there.

The heat rule will probably kick in this weekend going by the forecast. So, we will all be starting early.

Great finish for our rice crops

THERE could be a few records broken this year as the hot weather stays with us for the crucial microspore stage of the rice crops.

This is when the head is developing and moving up the stalk. Cold weather can kill the head or just some of the seeds and reduce the yield. School must be going back as summer will start on Saturday and give us a run of hot days, with the forecast 39 to 43 degrees.

Great for the rice. Not too good for our kinder kids.

River levels

OUR Edward is still steady at just over 2100 megs a day and around 2.08 metres. Cod are still biting well in our Edward with plenty of keepers getting landed as well as those that are too big to keep.

There was a 99cm cod caught just upstream and one a metre plus caught about 30km up from Moulamein. I saw a good sized cod landed just behind our bowling club.

My grandson finally caught a cod that he thought he could eat. Only 50cm, so it went back. He said he will go to that spot next year and he should be able to eat it. Cheese seemed to be the preferred bait this week.
