Mixed start for soccer Swans

IT was a weekend of mixed results for the Swan Hill Soccer League, walking away with two wins and three losses from the opening weekend of their Bendigo Amateur Soccer League season.

The men’s team began their season in the best way possible, defeating La Trobe University Red 3-1 at home.

Two first-half goals to Jason Stokes gave the Swans a 2-0 lead at half-time, before Cooper Fox extended the lead 10 minutes later.

Swan Hill continued to press home their advantage and created several chances to extend their lead further in the late stages of the match, but were unable to find the back of the net.

La Trobe’s Zac Gilmour scored in the shadows of the full-time whistle.

Swan Hill’s under-16 girls team find themselves in third on the BASL ladder after Saturday’s 5-2 win over Spring Gully Warriors.

Trinity Shelton (three goals) and Annabelle Fleming (two goals) helped provide the perfect start to their campaign.

The under-16 boys also began their BASL season at the weekend in a competitive 3-1 away loss to Kyneton.

After trailing 2-0 at half-time, the Swans clawed one goal back in the second half thanks to Qarin Zulkarnain, but were ultimately no match for Kyneton in what was for many their first official BASL match.

The Swan Hill youth boys and women’s teams were also unsuccessful in claiming points, the youth boys succumbing 8-0 to La Trobe University SC at home.

The women’s team lost 7-1 on the road to Strathfieldsaye Colts, with Abbey Houlihan the Swans’ lone goal scorer.
