Dow becomes a Saint

Swan Hill’s Paddy Dow will be wearing new colours in 2024, with the former Carlton midfielder traded to St Kilda on Tuesday during the AFL trade period.

Dow, who played 73 games for the Blues, was part of a complicated four club trade which also saw St Kilda’s Nick Coffield head to the Western Bulldogs, along with several draft picks exchanged between the three clubs and Essendon.

After nominating St Kilda last week, Dow got to his club of choice on the second last day of the trade period, where he will be reunited with Saints list boss Stephen Silvagni, the man who drafted him to Carlton with the third pick in the 2017 AFL national draft.

While disappointed to lose a player of Dow’s calibre, Carlton’s head of list management Nick Austin wished Dow all the best at his new club.

“We could not fault Paddy’s professionalism throughout this year, his ability to stay ready for his opportunity at senior level was first class,” Austin told the Carlton FC website this week.

“We had really open dialogue with Paddy and his management right throughout the year, and while we would have liked to retain him, he wants to play senior football every week, which we respect.

“With Paddy being out of contract, we’re pleased to be able to organise a trade that allows us to add to our future draft hand for next year.

“We’ve been clear in our aim to refresh our depth through trade or draft over this next period of our list development, this deal contributes towards that strategy.”
