Woman charged over unit fire

A WOMAN has been remanded to reappear at the Mildura Magistrate’s Court in April on charges of criminal damage by fire – arson for a fire that engulfed a Makepeace Street unit on Thursday evening.

The 31-year-old woman appeared in court on Friday after being arrested near the scene.

CFA Chief Fire Officer Gavin Wright said the unit was well alight when the brigade arrived at 6:30pm.

“The fire built very rapidly, burning very fiercely, and it was a great effort by Swan Hill, Woorinen and Lake Boga brigades to bring it under control in 20 minutes to prevent it from spreading to the neighbouring unit,” he said.

An investigation by Swan Hill Police and assisted by the CFA found the cause of the fire to be suspicious.

The unit was unoccupied at the time, and no one was injured.
