It’s fun to skate with the YMCA

SKATEBOARDERS of all ages are invited to join free skateboarding workshops at the Swan Hill riverside skate park today.

The sessions are a part of the YMCA’s All Aboard Skateboarding program, which aims to build confidence and teach skateboarding skills, while keeping a focus on community engagement.

There are two workshops scheduled for 10am and 11am that will last about an hour, with attendees to learn skills from Melbourne-based expert skateboarders.

These will include lessons about board maintenance, skate park etiquette and injury prevention.

After successful trials of the program in Melbourne, Leading Senior Constable Andrew Downes said Swan Hill Council and local police jumped at the opportunity to host one of the workshops.

“YMCA put a proposal to us to link in with the town and our police,” he said.

“It’s a great chance for the YMCA to come up and engage with a regional place.

“We’ve got to know our youth better and engage with youth.

“We want a community focus, so for us events like this are critical to be able to show the community that we are human, we are approachable and that we want to share all the delights we have at this park with the whole community.”

Those without a skateboard need not worry, as a few will be provided on the day.

Although the event will be focusing on skateboards, scooter riders were welcome to join the sessions as well.
