Charges follow fraud investigation

POLICE have charged a man as part of an investigation into alleged fraud and unexplained wealth.

This investigation began in December 2021, when police received information about alleged unexplained wealth and fraudulent investment schemes.

On August 8, 2022 police searched six properties in Sea Lake, Altona, Laverton and Woomelang.

Investigators seized a BMW X5, a Mercedes-Benz AMG and a high-end commercial coffee machine.

Three properties and an excavator were later restrained.

Criminal proceeds squad detectives charged an Altona man, 65, last week with attempting to pervert the course of justice.

Last August the man was initially charged with obtaining financial advantage by deception and knowingly dealing with the proceeds of crime as part of the investigation.

He will appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on May 2.

Anyone with information on fraudulent activity or unexplained wealth should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
