After a 2022 season marred by uncertainty of the future, the Golden Rivers Football Netball League will be forging ahead with a level of excitement unseen in years.
The departure of Nullawil, combined with the dissolution of Quambatook, has given hope to the remaining six clubs that 2023 may well be their year to celebrate. Every president, coach and player spoken to throughout the compiling of our season preview all expressed a sense of optimism that their club could well be the ones holding the silverware on Saturday, September 16.
With only six clubs remaining in the Golden Rivers, the general consensus is that the league is in trouble – and at risk of closure should Quambatook’s fate befall another club. But that perception is not matched with reality, with the competition running along in leaps and bounds.
All six senior football and netball teams will improve, with more players entering the league than at any time over recent seasons – while the unknown of what lays ahead has also created a very real buzz and atmosphere.
Will Moulamein go one step further than last year and break their 35-year premiership drought? Or will it be Hay, who have waited 28-years for success – or Macorna, who’s last premiership was back in 1970 who break through for victory? Or could a new dynasty be about to dawn for Wandella, Ultima or Murrabit – all clubs that know what it takes to win.
Whatever happens, 2023 promises to be for the ages in the Golden Rivers, with the dawn of a new era.
