LEITCHVILLE-GUNBOWER NETBALL PREVIEW
Leitchville-Gunbower Netball will have a familiar face taking the reins of A Grade coach this year, with local girl Gemma Angove taking on the crucial role.
After coaching the A-Reserve last year, Angove will fill the void left by 2022 coach Lauren Dehne.
Angove said she is enjoying the step up to the top job.
“I’ve absolutely loved it so far,” she said.
“I’ve had great support, which I expected because we’re such a family-orientated club, and I’ve grown up here.”
Angove has a big job on her hands, with the Bombers coming off a 5-11 record last season.
“We took some steps forward in 2022 but not to where we wanted to be, which is always finals,” Angove said.
“We got unlucky in a couple of games, so if we can take that next step, we’ll be aiming to make finals like every year.”
An inexperienced side will be at her disposal, but Angove said this could play into the Bombers’ hands.
“We know we’re going to have a young side this year, but that brings a lot of energy and enthusiasm,” she said.
“There’s a lot of youth but plenty of talent, too.”
Getting experience around the young core will be crucial, but former state player Ash Bradley will miss at least the start of the season for personal reasons, whilst another key cog in Emily Prout will also be absent from this year’s roster.
However, Maddison Curran has been able to commit to the whole season, which is a “massive inclusion,” said Angove.
The Bombers have also picked up shooter Matilda Candy from Lockington. Angove said she had shown much promise and commitment.
With a significant turnover in the A Grade, Angove hopes this team can forge their own path.
“Every player comes with their own attributes, so it’s not about replacing girls but building a team,” she said
The club is yet to announce its A Reserve coach.
Player To Watch
Maddison Curran has been able to commit to the whole season, and even though she is young, her leadership skills have already been recognised with induction into the leadership group. Her direction, patience and fitness on the court are all attributes the Bombers are crying out for.
