Swan Hill close in on finals berth

SWAN Hill are one step closer to yet another Weekend Pennant finals appearance following a commanding 93 to 66 shot win over Moulamein on Saturday at Swan Hill Bowls Club.

Moulamein went into the match-up 10 points behind fourth-placed Swan Hill on the ladder and knowing that anything less than victory would leave their finals hopes in tatters.

The Aaron Worboyes-led quartet certainly held up their end of the bargain for the visitors, defeating the Glenn Evans-led combination 30-21.

But for Moulamein, that was where the joy ended, with the home side comfortably accounting for the visitors by a combined 36 shots on the two remaining rinks to claim a 27-shot victory overall.

Murray Downs made it back-to-back victories on the weekend, winning a hard-fought contest against fellow top-four contender Lake Boga 83 to 71. In a match that ebbed and flowed, both Josh Thornton and John Caldwell led their sides to seven-shot wins on their respective rinks, while Daniel Kelly and his quartet claimed Lake Boga’s sole victory by two shots over Brian Lehmann.

In the other round 13 match Racecourse claimed a comfortable 88 to 51 win over Nyah District. The biggest result came at the hands of Norm Smith, Kylie Gardner, Ron Wolfe and Trevor Wiseman, with the quartet combining to claim a 37-10 win over Graham Muir’s side. Racecourse’s Mick Holyoak and his combination also had a comfortable victory over Rex Howard’s side by 20 shots.

It wasn’t all bad news for the Demons, however, with Bryan Smith and his team of Sheena Coe, Kerry Jenkins and Simon Wynne adding some respectability to the scoreboard for the home side with a 10-shot victory on the final rink.
