Murray Downs Womens Golf Classic a success

PLAYERS at the 27th annual Murray Downs Women’s Golf Classic braved the weather last week in the event’s return after a two-year COVID-enforced hiatus.

Murray Downs women’s captain Mag Kiley spoke to The Guardian and was pleased with the response from participants.

“It was a very successful tournament,” she said. “We’ve had great accolades from the visitors regarding the condition of the Murray Downs course and our hospitality.”

The classic was ran over three days, with a Stableford event on Wednesday followed by the main course on Thursday – the Murray Downs Amateur Classic Champion – before finishing with a four-ball-best-ball Stableford (4BBB) event last Friday.

Rising star Olive Spitty continued her fantastic year that has included winning the Murray Downs Ladies Club Championship by taking out the Amateur Classic with a scratch score of 80.

Kate Schwarz from Keysborough was runner-up with a score of 84.

Lynne Bishop won the Stableford event on Wednesday, with Mary Winser and Jenny Maggs from Port Fairy rounding out the week by securing the 4BBB Stableford event.

The classic’s popularity was proven, with golfers from all over the state coming to participate.

“We had visitors from 23 golf clubs ranging from Gisborne, Keysborough, Dimboola, Mildura and Port Fairy, which was great,” Kiley said.

A total of 244 players took part over the three days, with 108 players competing in the 4BBB event on Friday.

“The weather was unkind on Wednesday – out of the 120 players who started, only 55 finished their round,” Kiley said.

“But considering the weather, the numbers we had throughout the week was an incredible feat.”
