Stay on alert for wet weather

DESPITE a tornado warning and 35mm of rainfall last week, Swan Hill SES unit controller Darren Barnes said they had no calls for help or calls about storm damage.

But with more wet weather predicted this week, Mr Barnes warned locals to remain vigilant.

“The continual wet weather is going to cause issues with the rivers and the local flooding areas,” he said.

“The ground can’t take any more water so we are getting a lot of run-off, and in low-lying areas it is very muddy so people have got to be a little bit aware of where they go and not to go into areas where they could get stuck.”

So far this month Swan Hill has recorded 35mm of rain, all within 72 hours last week.

Some things you can do to ensure as little damage as possible during the wet weather include making sure gutters are cleaned and stormwater drains are clear so they can flow freely to get rid of the water as quickly as possible.

“I think we will have a few storms come this summer, but they are going to be storms that you are not going to be able to really predict, they will just sort of happen,” Mr Barnes said.

Mr Barnes also encouraged people to download the VicEmergency app, the official Victorian Government app for access to community information and warnings for all types of emergencies across the state.

The app is particularly useful for those who are travelling.

“Use the VicEmergency app to check the conditions of where you are heading,” Mr Barnes said.

“It’s a good tool to use when you are travelling around.”

In the Murray system, moderate flooding is occurring at Barham and Torrumbarry.

The Murray River at Torrumbarry Weir may reach around 7m, with moderate flooding, while the Murray at Barham may reach near 6m, with moderate flooding.

Downstream of Barham, where minor flooding is occurring along the Murray River at Wakool Junction and is possible at Boundary Bend.

The Murray River at Wakool Junction may reach near 9m at the end of the week, with minor flooding.
