Adjournment in Manangatang murder case

THE case of a man charged with the murder of a seasonal worker has been adjourned for two months.

Dael Daniel Newman appeared before Mildura Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, where defence counsel said they were waiting for a “key statement” from the only eyewitness and “surviving victim”.

Mr Newman, 41, of Albury, is facing charges of murder, intentionally causing injury and two aggravated assault charges related to a home invasion.

Emergency services were called to a Manangatang property about 9.15pm on March 30 this year, following reports of a stabbing.

On arrival, police and paramedics worked on 58-year-old Dave Gaskell, who was allegedly found with critical injuries.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The defence said they were also yet to see a post mortem examination report, with both documents needed to provide advice to Mr Newman about a committal hearing.

The prosecution said the documents should be provided to defence counsel this week.

Mr Newman appeared by video link from Melbourne Assessment Prison for the hearing.

The case was adjourned to October 26 for committal mention.
