Swan Hill, Lake Boga hope for big crowd for Anzac Day clash

SWAN Hill and Lake Boga are hoping Sunday’s standalone Anzac Day clash could be built into an ongoing tradition between the two clubs.

Although the league has played matches on the weekend of Anzac Day, this is the first time that their has been a standalone match for the occasion.

“We have got a good relationship with Lake Boga and we just identified them as the first club that we would like to play,” Swan Hill club secretary Carl Hufer said.

“Fortunately they said ‘yes’ and we are really thankful for them to do that.

“We hope between the two clubs we can work together in future years to organise an Anzac Day game,.

“We are always after other opportunities, like we have held night football in the past.”

Hufer said the club was hopeful of drawing a large crowd, with the standalone clash between Woorinen and Cohuna on Good Friday proving a success.

“We wanted to do something and the club identified the Sunday,” he said.

“With Monday being the public holiday we thought being a stand along Sunday game would generate some interest.

“We thought it would be a good opportunity with no other sport being played. We requested it through the league and lucky enough they have granted approval for us to play.”

“We are really looking forward to the game.”

The Anzac Day occasion will be marked with a pre-match ceremony, which will be held in conjunction with Swan Hill RSL, with the ode, the last post, the raising of the flag and a minute’s silence.

There will also be free entry for any returned servicemen and some fundraising for the RSL.

The A Grade netball and senior football sides will play for Anzac Day trophies, while there will also be a best on ground medal for both senior football and A grade netball.

“The weather looks perfect and being the standalone game we are looking at hopefully a decent crowd,” he said.

“We think it will be a obviously really good game in the seniors.

“Hopefully it will create a fair bit of interest in the town.”
