NYAH DISTRICT 7-187 defeated WOORINEN 10-114
Nyah District maintained their grip on top spot – and solidified a finals berth in the process – by defeating Woorinen at Tigerland on Saturday afternoon.
Celebrating their 10-year premiership reunion, the current day Tigers were unable to match the feats on their predecessors, going down to the Demons by 73-runs.
Batting first, Nyah District made a slow start, with the undermanned Woorinen bowling a tight line and length to well set fields, to keep the run rate to a minimum. The only issue for the Tigers was the lack of wickets, which would come back to bite them later on, as a late innings hammering from a relieved Justin Toomey (59) and Ash Thompson (53 not out) saw the Demons post a very defendable 7/187 – with Darren Rushton the pick of the bowlers, taking 4/64 from 19 overs.
In reply, the Woorinen run chase never really got going, with the regular loss of wickets making it hard for the home side to build that match winning partnership that was required. Marcus Mangiameli continued his excellent form, compiling a composed 35 at the top of the order, while Stefan Mangiameli’s late 38-run cameo showed that he should be potentially batting a higher up the order.
With four wickets to Charlie Boulton and three to skipper Ben Shadbolt, the Demons held their nerve to record a comfortable victory and move on to next week’s top of the ladder clash with St.Mary’s-Tyntynder.
RSL 10-119 lost to ULTIMA-TUF 5-133
Perennial finalist RSL’s season has been left hanging by a thread following their five-wicket loss to Ultima-TUF.
Batting first, the Blues failed to capitalise on their home ground advantage, being bowled out in the 34th over for just 119. Stuart Patterson was the only batsman to make any impression, blasting the Roodogs attack to all parts of Gurnett Oval on his way to 71 off just 57 balls, which included 11 fours and three sixes.
Unfortunately for Patterson, he didn’t get much help, with Pat Caldwell the only teammate who was able to bat with him for any length of time, as the pair put on 50-runs for the sixth wicket.
Ultima-TUF put in a solid team effort with the ball, with Jordan King leading the way with four wickets. Ben Shepherd claimed 3/21 off 6 overs against his former side, while Sam Hinton was the other multiple wicket taker with two.
The Roodogs run chase got off to a shaky start however, losing Josh Waldron without scoring, before Ben Shepherd, Will Nelson and Kyle Symons all came and went with the score at just 37.
That was where the fun ended for the home side, as Kade Benfield (25) and Mitch Seton-Stewart (50 not out) set about guiding their team home with a 56-run fifth wicket partnership.
It was then left to Seton-Stewart to get Ultima-TUF over the line after Benfield perished with his side still requiring 26-runs for victory – although it mattered little in the end, with the Roodogs passing the Blues total five down and moving into fifth spot on the ladder and nine points outside the top four.
WANDELLA 10-209 defeated SWAN HILL 10-37
Wandella recovered from potential disaster to produce a percentage-boosting 172-run win over Swan Hill.
The winless Swans claimed three early wickets to have Wandella reeling at 3/3, but from that moment on, the match belonged to the Bombers.
Toby Gray (73 off 96 balls), Daniel Higgs (49 off 47 balls) and Luke Murray (33 off 61 balls) put an end to any hopes of a Swan Hill upset, helping their team to post a formidable score of 209 before htey were bowled out in the 49th over.
The Swans tried every trick in the book in an effort to stem the bleeding, including using eight bowlers, with Jack Trollope and Cal Noonan both taking three wickets each to lead the way.
Swan Hill was never in the run chase, with no batsman reaching double figures as they were skittled all out for 37 in just 16.2 overs.
Logan Keighran rattled through the Swan Hill batting order to finish with the amazing figures of 6/4, whi6 wickets for just 4 runs – while Ryan Barnes continued his impressive 2021-22 season, taking 3 for 31.
