Number plate thefts continue in Swan Hill and Gannawarra

NUMBER plates continue to be stolen from vehicles in both the Swan Hill and Gannawarra regions.

Swan Hill police Senior Constable Travis Collier said installing the one-way screws was the best way to prevent the number plates from being stolen.

Last month, Swan Hill police offered the screws for free to combat the rise in the theft of the number plates.

Sen-Constable Collier said police in Swan Hill and Kerang planned to hold another drive-in service.

Police remove the screws for vehicle owners, and install the one-way screws.

Kerang police Senior Sergeant Michael Kearnes said he believed offenders stole number plates to commit crimes, such as petrol theft or to evade police.

“To prevent your number plates from being stolen, we encourage community members to obtain theft prevention screws for their number plates, which are available from Bunnings,” Sen-Sgt Kearnes said.

Between 4.30pm on October 11, and 3.30pm on October 12, the unknown offender/s stole number plates from a vehicle parked out the front of a property on Vaughan Street in Kerang.

Between 5pm on October 13, and 7.30am the next day, the unknown offender/s removed number plates from a vehicle parked outside a property on Beveridge Street in Swan Hill.

On the same days, between 6.30pm on October 13, and 7.30am on October 14, number plates were removed from a vehicle parked in a carport at a property on Murray Street in Kerang.

Sen-Constable Collier said police also allege a solar light and a set of fairy lights were also taken from the residence.
