FLOODING is expected in the region as more water is released into the Murray River from the Hume Dam.
Murray-Darling Basin Authority (MDBA) acting chief executive Andrew Reynolds said forecast of between 50 and 100mm of rain starting midweek promoted the MDBA to increase releases from the dam, near Albury, to create more airspace.
“Releases were stepped up on Friday ahead of what is expected to be a sustained wet weather event spanning several days from tomorrow,” Mr Reynolds said.
“These airspace releases are expected to remain in-channel over the weekend, however this is subject to change as information about this weather system improves and our river operators make adjustments accordingly.”
Above-average rainfall was expected in the upper Murray catchment in late September and October and there was an increased chance of flooding, particularly on the floodplains between Hume Dam and Yarrawonga Weir.
“The MDBA is working closely with the Bureau of Meteorology, WaterNSW and the NSW and Victorian State Emergency Services to provide flood preparedness safety messages,” Mr Reynolds said.
