Swan Hill athletes dominate at Deni

RECORDS fell, medals were won and personal bests were achieved at Deniliquin last Sunday, when 40 Swan Hill athletes competed in the Deniliquin Little Athletics Centre Carnival.

It was a successful day for many of Swan Hill’s newest track and field stars, with Kayla McInerney dominating her age group by breaking three carnival records in the 100m sprint, 80m hurdles and long jump.

Other Swan Hill athletes to break carnival records included Spencer Mitchell, who broke the discus record in his age group, Sienna Colombo who set a new 800m record and Lachie Chalmers, who now holds the high jump record.

They competed against athletes from other Victorian and New South Wales centres in various athletics track and field events.

Swan Hill Little Athletics Centre secretary Felicia Chalmers said there was a great team atmosphere on the day, with parents and athletes all getting involved.

“These carnivals are a unique chance to participate as a team, where our athletes can cheer on fellow Swan Hill teammates,” Chalmers said.

“It helps our athletes gauge where they sit in their age groups among other little athletes, and to aim for better and better PBs.”

Swan Hill’s athletes will now begin their preparations to compete at the club’s Open Day next Sunday, which will be held at the Ken Harrison Sporting Complex.
