Moulamein notes: August 7, 2020

Increased allocation

WHILE my Murray mates have been enjoying their off-quota, us lucky ones on the Murrumbidgee have had an increase from 14 per cent to 16 per cent of what we own.

This is almost as much as we have had in the past two years combined and it is only the start of the second month of the water year.

I may get to grow rice yet.

So far, it is just grow sheep feed and maybe cut a bit of hay for the sheep and a couple of horses.

I know my little mate with the horses is keen for that to happen.

Lake full

DUE to the recent ripper event of off-quota, our Moulamein lake is just above what I call high water level.

Which is well-above what could be called full.

As treasurer, I am not looking forward to the next power bill.

We still have a bit of free board just in case we get a rain event.

Our lake needs all the water it can get as we only have 2 per cent of our water that we own.

Also, unfortunately, we have had to use our allocation from the top down to fill our lake. This has taken about three quarters of what we own.

Let’s hope our council still read my notes as we still need their usual help to keep our Moulamein town emergency water supply full.

Fire brigade training

THERE was a basic firefighters course run out at Mallan this week by our district RFS.

Unfortunately, if you ever want to get onto a fire truck to battle our bush fires, you will need this qualification.

At the moment, in the RFS, once you get this ticket, you have it for life.

This is a two-day course, but you can do the first day online if you cannot spare the two days.

The more training you do, the better trucks you will get.

Have a look at our Moulamein Town Brigade; we get the new trucks because we train.

A small amount of training can get you up the list of the better trucks.

The white shirts are not going to give their best trucks to brigades that do not give a s***.

Take your truck for a drive, call the drive in, call in every fire you go to, it all helps.

Please take the time to get your basic firefighters before you get busy growing rice.
