PLANS are underway to bring silo art to Swan Hill.
Public art projects mounted on grain storage facilities have become a way for country towns to breathe life into their tourism sector, for some it has proved a lifeline in the face of an ever-shrinking population.
Now, Swan Hill local Max Brereton and a group of “three or four” other dedicated residents are working to bring the face of the Curlewis Street grain storage facilities to life.
Under the plans, one silo would host a visage of the iconic PS Pyap, while the other would display a portrait of the man who named Swan Hill, Major Sir Thomas Mitchell.
Mr Brereton said he would undertake the work himself, estimating both pieces would take him “the best part of three or four days”.
“A local group has for some time been negotiating with GrainCorp’s silo art co-ordinator in Sydney, seeking permission to use grain storages in Curlewis street,” he said.
GrainCorp corporate affairs manager Luke O’Donnell said “conditional approval” had been granted, and they were moving to the next stage.
“We need to see a draft of the artwork, what insurances the artist will have and we will need to see examples of previous artworks.
“We will also need to work with council to ensure it is constructed safely.”
