Rural churches prove popular among homeowners

St Joseph’s Church at Nyah West has been a place of worship for many in the past.

However, following the church’s closure in January, the unique site is now on the market.

A decision was made by the Catholic Diocese of Ballarat to close the church at the start of the year due to the small number of attendees.

Although St Joseph’s held services only once a month, it was cherished among members of the community.

Selling agent Brian Wood of Wood & Co Real Estate said it was common to see churches on the market in rural areas.

“It’s one of these things that happens quite often; the churches just aren’t viable to run anymore,” Mr Wood said.

“This is happening all around the smaller towns in the region and their shops are shutting down too.”

St Mary’s Parish Priest, Father Matthew Thomas said many of St Joseph’s parishioners now attended St Mary’s.

“It was the decision of the people of Nyah West to shut down the church,” Fr Thomas said.

“They wanted to be part of a larger church community in Swan Hill and are really enjoying being part of that community.”
