Junior fire brigade members recognised

The Swan Hill Junior Fire Brigade have recognised and celebrated the achievements of their young members during a special awards evening.

Tom Cunningham took home the top prize for the under 17s competition and Porsha Bruton won the under 14 competition.

Long service awards were also handed out on the night, with some members being rewarded for almost five years of service.

Swan Hill Fire Brigade junior development coordinator Denise Jordan said the Junior Fire Brigade was always looking for new members.

“Over the summer we were meeting a few times a week,” Ms Jordan said.

“Now the fire season is over we will be running skill development lessons over school terms two and three.”

The Swan Hill Junior Fire Brigade is one of more than 200 brigades of its kind across the state and is aimed at children aged between 11 and 15 with an interest in helping the community.

They participate in a wide variety of social, recreational and educational activities at their local brigade.

When juniors turn 16 they can apply to become senior members of the brigade. Ms Jordan said the Junior Fire Brigade was targeted at children who were interested in participating in something other than sport.

“There is a great team atmosphere in training,” she said.

“They have the chance to learn about what it means to work together in a team and see what is involved in being part of a volunteer organisation.

“It also gives them a chance to give back to the community.”

Last month the Swan Hill juniors competed in the Region 18 Championships, winning the overall competition.

The under 14 team have also had recent success, placing second at the State Championships at Tatura.
