Swan Hill police has made a desperate plea to drivers to slow down on country roads and highways after drivers were allegedly caught travelling at “ridiculous” speeds recently.
Highway patrol unit Senior Constable Neal Leach said the latest slogan from road safety advocate Transport Accident Commission (TAC) – “no one deserves to die on our roads” – had failed to resonate with drivers.
Senior-Con Leach said a 28-year-old Tresco man was allegedly caught travelling 162kmh in a 100kmh zone on the Murray Valley Highway at Lake Charm on January 21.
Less than two hours later, a Mildura man, 23, was caught travelling 155kmh south on the Murray Valley Highway at Tresco.
The same weekend, a man, aged in his 30s, was caught travelling 124kmh at Lake Boga and tested positive to methamphetamine in his system, while another motorists was caught speeding at 147kmh in a 100kmh zone on the Loddon Valley Highway at Tragowel.
Police were again dismayed after a driver was nabbed travelling 145kmh in a 100kmh zone on the Calder Highway at Sea Lake.
All drivers were charged and summoned to appear in court at a later date.
