Murray Plains MP Peter Walsh has called for law and order reform following the Bourke Street Mall massacre, telling State Parliament that people sought him out on Australia Day to express their “seething” anger about the crime crisis in Victoria.
“They were polite, as country people are, but you could tell that they were very, angry about the events that are unfolding in this state,” The Victorian Nationals leader told Parliament on the first sitting day for the year. The six victims of the January 20 tragedy were remembered by the state’s leaders in a motion passed by Premier Daniel Andrews.
“They expressed their concerns that the police seem powerless at times to do what needs to be done, and they would like to see that changed,” Mr Walsh said.
“As I talk to the police, everyone goes to work to do a good job but there is a belief that the system is actually failing people at the moment.
“They were the things that were brought to me at those Australia Day functions.”
