Swan Hill Rural City Council questions whether the funding of the school crossing supervisor program is a local government responsibility after a state government announcement it will restore its 50 per cent contribution from next year.
Under the current funding model, local government contributed 60 per cent, with a 40 per cent subsidy from the State Government.
“As our ability to fund services in an ever tightening fiscal environment becomes harder, council will continue to question if it is appropriate to use ratepayer funds to top-up what is really a state responsibility,” Swan Hill chief executive officer John McLinden said.
The government announced last Friday that it would restore its 50-50 contribution from July 1 next year.
