Shotput star rockets into national contest

JUST one year after taking up the sport of shotput, eleven-year-old Dante Miliano will represent his state at a national tournament schools later this month.

The youngster only picked up a shotput last year, but has since put in a lot of hard work to get himself into a position to take a medal at the National School Sport event with Team Victoria.

He won a gold medal at his recent state championships, and now he is gearing up to take on the best of the best.

Speaking to The Guardian, Dante said he will look to throw even further in an attempt to win at his second nationals.

“I won the gold medal… with a throw of 12.92m which isn’t my best but its around there,” he said.

“I get to go to Nationals in Sydney and compete against the other states. I was at last year’s competition as well and I want to do better.

“I would like to take a medal home and hopefully I can throw well.”

In last year’s event, with next to no training under his belt, Dante finished seventh in a field of more than 10 competitors.

With a full year of training under his belt, he is hoping to throw around 13m at nationals in order to pick up a medal.

“I am confident to give them a run for their money,” Dante said.

“I will keep practicing and going over my routine, I need to just keep throwing.”
