TWO Swan Hill trainers have stormed home to get their first wins of the season at the weekend.
Both Joe Kelly and Collin Fletcher found themselves their maiden 2016-17 race season winners, on top of yet another win to the Coffey clan.
Seulamont had crossed the finish line first on Saturday in Balranald before being bumped back to second spot, but the win finally came for Kelly on Tuesday at Wentworth with the same horse.
Firming in as a chance heading into the race, the nine-year-old gelding, ridden by Jemma Frew, came home strong to beat both favourites to claim the gong in an 1840m event.
Kelly said he had foreseen the good form coming due to the training the horse is receiving.
“I am very happy, he has just found his form again,” he said.
“He gets into form at this time of the year and he has raced in peak fitness. This is a good time of year for horses of his standard.
“I was pretty confident, he is quite likely to win another race of the same standard before the end of spring… he will get out at Hay and Moulamein.
“I was very relieved to win. He was the outsider but he had a weight advantage on the favourites so it wasn’t a surprise for me.”
Almost 12 months to the day, Fletcher has finally seen another winner.
He took Ziggy’s Jewel to Mildura on Tuesday, finding the winner on Cup Day.
The five-year-old mare was ridden by Jessica Eaton in the victory, storming home in the 1400m race.
“The horse has come every position in the book and she deserved the win, she is a good little horse, I was pretty stoked about it,” he said.
“She is a horse I broke in from a two-year-old and she has had a few starts in preparation but she is competitive.
“It was her maiden race in the 1400m, it gives you something to go on and is pretty special.”
Harry and Austy Coffey were at it again with a win in Mildura as well.
The father-son duo picked up a winner with Tia Dalma in the 1800m event.
