When it comes to volunteering, the Hayes family are a hard act to follow with almost a century of service to a multitude of community services and groups.
Travelling from their farming property 40km from Swan Hill on Moulamein road, 76-year-old Judy Hayes has been giving her time at Alcheringa and Meals on Wheels for more than 15 years. Through rain, hail or shine she has made the trip into town to assist the residents of the aged care hostel with crafts such as knitting, and playing the piano and singing to them.
“It’s just what I’ve always done,” Judy recalled
“My parents were foster carers and from a young age I would visit the elderly and sing to them.
“I was often in trouble for not doing my homework because I’d be spending my time with the oldies.”
Husband Cliff has volunteered as president of the Swan Hill Flying Club and plays a large role with the Speewa Heritage Collectors Club as do other members of the family. At 80 years old Cliff has no plans to slow down.
