A SECOND quarter run has allowed the Swan Hill Lady Flyers to thump Echuca Pirates 103-54 at the weekend.
The away side weren’t happy with the umpires for the fouls given after the match, but the home side’s speed and endurance was enough to send the Pirates packing.
It was battle stations from the word go, with Madeleine Jeans scrapping to win the ball after a wayward tip came down toward a Pirate.
Echuca Pirates captain Madi Higgins said the Flyers were good but they weren’t given anything from umpires.
“It didn’t go our way, we did better than last week in scoring but we had some really bad luck with the calls from the referees,” she told The Guardian.
“We need to be more disciplined in our defence and keep adjusting our game… I was happy with the girls, we never gave up.”
By the end of the first quarter, the Pirates had players already on four fouls for themselves.
The Swan Hill Lady Flyers made many trips to the free throw line as the Pirates continuously gave away free points.
On more than one occasion, the Flyers made sure their fouls counted with three-point plays.
Flyers coach Sharon Denham said the side was feeling good and had the chance to test out some of their defensive tactics.
“We played really well as a team tonight, we tried a few different things in defence and things we had worked on at training,” she said.
“We can only get better from here, but our only concern is our defence. We are in a good place at the minute and we love playing.
“We do rush. We get a rush of blood and they get excited… we need to be able to play with poise and know when to run it through hands.”
The Flyers will take on Bendigo in Swan Hill on Sunday from 1pm.
