The 159 Victoria Police officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty have been honoured by the March2Remember, which began in Swan Hill yesterday morning.
As part of the Blue Ribbon Foundation’s fundraising efforts, 10 teams will walk for 10 days, finishing on Blue Ribbon Day on September 29 at the Police Memorial in Kings Domain, where the honour roll will be handed back to the Chief Commissioner.
The relay will travel to Kerang, Serpentine, Bendigo, Castlemaine, Maryborough, Ballarat, Ballan and Melton.
A former Kerang man who served as a police officer at Swan Hill was specifically remembered during the first leg of the relay.
Robert “Rocky” Lane, then 32, was a Detective Senior Constable at Swan Hill when he was murdered on the morning of Friday, July 13, 1979.
Det Sen-Constable Lane was called to Kyalite to make enquiries in relation to a stolen car when he was shot three times with a rifle in a cold-blooded execution.
