Ladies Country Teams Division 3 Premiers

THE Northern District Ladies Country Week team is celebrating after winning the Division 3 Premiership at the 2016 event held on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of this week.

This is an excellent result for our district’s female golfers and adds to wins in this division in 1990, 2003, 2007 and 2013.

Being one of the smaller associations, it is a credit to the selectors and team managers that the very best female golfers in NDGA made themselves available to represent their district.

This year, with the addition of Jane Wall from Barham, who plays off a scratch handicap, at the coveted Number 1 position, the team convincingly won its two games on Monday against Wimmera in the morning 5.5 matches to 1.5, followed by a 7-0 rout of Kara Kara in the afternoon.

Northern were ladder leaders after Day 1.

Following the bye on Tuesday morning, the NDGA faced the strong West Gippsland team in the afternoon.

A win in this match was important and the 5.5 to 1.5 result was a confidence booster for the team who were still on top of the ladder.

The NDGA team was the only undefeated team with only South Gippsland to play on Wednesday morning.

This game turned out to be a close contest as although Northern drew first blood with Chris Warburton winning 5/4, South Gippsland won the next completed match.

As well, Kathy Parkinson was having a close tussle with her opponent, before eventually halving her match, with the overall result still in the balance.

Northern’s top player, Jane Wall had another early finish, winning her match easily, 7/6, and Lynne Bishop saluted with a 4/2 win.

When Mary Anne Davis and Jo Watts won their matches the celebrations started.

Heather Harley completed the stunning win with a birdie on her last hole to win 1 up to secure a comfortable 5.5 to 1.5 win to the Northern girls.

This win will see the NDGA team promoted to the Division 2 competition next year, and on the performances through this event will acquit themselves very well in the higher division.

To go through the series undefeated and with only three matches lost for the week is a tremendous effort.

Congratulations to all those involved – the players, the team managers and selectors and to those other girls who gave up their time to travel with the team as caddies and support the team over the four days.

SMALL fields attended last weekend with many members on club visitations in support of other small clubs throughout the district and the region.

The men contested the monthly medal playing stableford, and Gary Farley lined up for the winner’s trophy scoring 39 points off his 22 handicap, with Michael Watson (14) very close behind on 38 points.

The ladies also competed for their monthly medal but playing stroke, and Lynette Van Zyl continued her strong form to easily win 92/22/70 from Thelma Watson runner up with 111/30/81 and the others not far behind.

It was a closed shop for the nearest the pins with the daily winners also cleaning them up when Lynette won on the second and 16th, Michael the 12th and Gary the 15th.

On Sunday, the annual Norma Reid Memorial three-person mixed ambrose will be played, and we encourage anyone at all, whether you are a club member or not, and you like playing golf or would like to try, then please come along and support Bob Reid and his family in memory of Norma, a wonderful club member and damn good golfer.

Just be at the clubhouse by noon to join in this relaxing and social event, and then enjoy the beautiful afternoon tea to follow.

Congratulations to club president, Dennis Pretty, for winning the morning nine hole event and being part of the winning teams event at last weekend’s Lakeside tournament, whilst over at Berriwillock, Cheryl Muir and Janet Brauer won the ladies annual tournament, Jack Paynter and Peter Wilkinson the men’s division two of the annual tournament, and Andrew Flanagan came home with a new putter for being nearest the pin over the two days of the tournament.

Veterans

ONLY 20 Veterans contested the Sandscrape Championships at the Murrabit golf course on Tuesday on a very foggy winters morning.

Those who didn’t attend missed out on the usual Murrabit hospitality.

The scones were very tasty.

Ladies champion was president Ruth McAllister with 102 and runner up was Jenice Krahnert with 105.

Men’s champion was Peter Kelly with 76 and Ian Dodd came second with 79.

The winner of B Grade was Rick McKenzie with 95 and runner up was Ken Jones with 97.

Nearest the pins was Luke Kelly while the ball winners were Pauline Jones, Evelyn Adams, Sam Guastalegname, Chris Veldman, David Wilkinson, Geoff Williams and Joe Tartaglia.

The next veterans event is at Cohuna on the Tuesday September 20, not the 13th as in the 2016 fixture.

The event is the Northern District Veterans championship 9am assembly for 9.30am start.

Shooting

Clay Target

THE Swan Hill Clay Target Club held its Swan Hill Classic on Sunday.

It was a great day, the weather looked dicey but held on for us. The sun shone on and off, the wind picked up and played with a few targets and the clouds rolled in threatening rain, but in all a great day.

Thank you to all who attended from near and far (Ballarat the farthest I recall hearing).

And thank you to all those who helped out throughout the day, we can’t do it without you.

Results were tight in many grades with quite a few shoot offs, especially the epic battle for first in AA for Event 3.

Great effort by Anthony Costa, obtaining his 100 break badge and beating Mark Vistarini.

In the beginners’ group, Luca Delmenico celebrated his second week’s play with a strong win, when he went unbeaten for the night.

Hayley Dickson came second and Breanna Dickson and Aria Watson-Middleton shared third place.

Senior

A GRADE provided the first thriller of the semi finals, with What’s Our Name? and Sixers winning three sets apiece.

What’s Our Name? got away fast when Quenten Graham and Jamie Whateley scored a 13 point victory.

It was the first of three for Graham, who was instrumental in his team’s six point win.

Sixers’ Andrew Sartori and Michael Martin almost returned the match to balance, with an 11 point win in the second set.

That was the last comfortable win — Graham and Dylan Kiel won by three from Trevor Rowlands and Sartori, and Graham and Chris Rowlands followed suit to complete the Names’ winning tally.

Matt Heffer and Martin won by a single point over Whateley and Chris Rowlands, and Heffer and Sartori also scored a one point win in the final set, leaving Sixers six points adrift after a pulsating match.

Avengers did it much more easily in the other semi, winning all sets over Mixed Up, and finishing 47 points in front.

The first set was a terrific contest, with Avengers’ Barry Dow and Colin Free beating Danny Gardner and Marcus McCaig 40-39.

From then on, Avengers’ Nengah Sudiarsa and Rory Toyib joined Dow and Free to ease into the preliminary final in convincing fashion.

Unfit Bits scored an easy win in B1 grade, beating Brushed Spuds by 57 points.

Ryan Rowlands, Jake Fedele, Josh Scott and Brendan Gibbs were in top form for the Bits.

Dane Koetsvelt and Kat Kiel almost grabbed a set for the Spuds, getting 39 points against Rowlands and Gibbs in the second last set of the night.

Raging Rackets was an even more decided winner in its encounter with Shenanigans.

The Rackets proved a much more experienced outfit and its run at the 2015 title showed this clearly, especially against Shenanigans’ pair of juniors.

Peter Stanton and Adam Williamson had to work hard in the first set to win by six points against Matt Quaife and substitute Emma McNees, but the Rackets romped away in the rest of the match.

In B2 grade, Family Goals was pushed to the limit before finally getting home from Off to Rio by 11 points.

The Family side won the first two sets, with Vaughn Catton and Linda Taylor winning by ten, before Holly and Nick Higginbottom scored by a point from Mitchell Barkman and Logan Dyer.

The Barkman twins won the next 40-39 for Off to Rio, just touching out Catton and Holly Higginbottom.

The fourth and fifth sets cancelled out, with each team posting a 40-28 victory.

In the final set, Holly Higginbottom completed her battle against Mitchell Barkman, when she played with Taylor to again score by a point from Barkman and Eric Dyer.

Date Rowls won five sets to one against Golden Oldies, but it was no walkover, with most sets closely contested. Barry Date and Mark Rowlands each won their three for the Rowls to steer their two young team-mates (Chloe Date and Megan Rowlands) to victory.

Kerry White and Bec Nietvelt won the only set for the Oldies, but Robin Elliott and Nietvelt went mighty close in another, going down by a mere three points.

Next week the finals’ program will be:

A grade – Sixers v. Avengers

B1 grade – Raging Rackets v Unfit Bits

B2 grade – Family Goals v Date Rowls
