Man lucky after rollover

AN elderly man was lucky to walk away with only minor injuries after his vehicle rolled several times on the Murray Valley Highway at Castle Donnington on Monday night.

The single-occupant driver, aged in his 60s, was travelling east on the highway near a level crossing when he lost control of his Nissan sedan on a sweeping bend and rolled about three times shortly before 5.30pm.

Senior Constable Andrew Paterson, from Swan Hill Highway Patrol, said drugs, speed and alcohol were being investigated as possible contributing factors.

“There were calls made to police earlier of a similar vehicle description driving erratically on the highway, but that has not been confirmed,” Senior Constable Paterson said.

The man was transported to Swan Hill District Health in a stable condition with lacerations to his upper body after he was trapped in the vehicle for about 30 minutes, Ambulance Victoria spokesperson Lisa Hind said.

“It is a timely reminder for motorists to pull over if they feel fatigued. With the nights getting longer, motorists need to be driving to the conditions on the roads and be aware of their surrounds,” Senior Constable Paterson said.

Anyone who witnessed the collision are urged to contact Swan Hill Police on 5036 1600 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
