IN a top of the table clash, Woorinen took Castlemaine to the limits, but in the end it was the Magpies who would get over the Tigers by three points.
The match was played in good conditions on Sunday at Woorinen Recreation Reserve, with the away side getting the points in tough circumstances, 5.6.36 to Woorinen’s 5.3.33.
The home side — led by Victorian ruckman Isabella Ayre — were good throughout the match, proving to the competition Castlemaine could be knocked off come finals.
Woorinen Youth Girls football director Brenten Hogan said the match was great to watch for those in attendance.
“It was a great game to watch, it was a very consistent game and both sides attacked well … the handball was a bit of a feature,” he said.
“The Castlemaine girls had a bit of the ball early and then we came back and were unlucky not to win it … the tackling was pretty impressive from both sides really.
“We did have the ability to win. The Castlemaine defence was very good, we have the ability to beat them and we put a scare through their camp with the way we played and it gives us confidence knowing we can get them.”
State ruckman Ayre managed to kick two goals in her best on ground performance, while Jordyn Jolliffe was instrumental across the ground.
The talented youngster started at centre half back before moving up forward where she found two majors.
With the loss, Woorinen will move down to third spot, but with the knowledge they can take it to the only undefeated side left in the competition.
A competition-wide bye will be in effect this weekend before the Tigers take on Eaglehawk on June 19.
