AFTER a dry April, a welcome weekend drenching has set Swan Hill farmers in good stead for the season ahead.
The entire rainfall for April came over the last two days of the month as Swan Hill recorded 15mm of rain throughout Friday and Saturday, before an overnight storm brought another 7.4mm in the early hours of Sunday.
Many of the farmers across the region will finish sowing their crops with a smile, including Berriwillock farmer Caroline Renney, who recorded 15mm of rainfall at her property during the downpour Saturday night.
“We’re about three quarters of the way through our cropping program, so that should get most of it going,” she said.
“They’re predicting a wet May so hopefully it keeps up.”
Lalbert farmer Daniel Brullo, who started sowing wheat, barley and peas on his 1000 acre farm two weeks ago, was also grinning.
Mr Brullo welcomed the “great start to the season” but stressed the need for more wet weather in the coming months.
“It will be good to sow in moisture, as it’s been pretty dusty,” he said.
“It was good timing but if we can have some consistency that would be good.
