Anzac Appeal

THIS year’s Anzac Day commemoration events have been finalised, and residents will be able to pay their respects in ceremonies around the region.

Locals can attend dawn services at Kyalite, Nyah and Swan Hill, with morning services to be held throughout the municipality, extending to Ultima and Lake Boga.

In Swan Hill, Vietnam War veterans will lead the march down Campbell Street, in honour of the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan.

St Mary MacKillop College student Bridget Haley, who won a state award for her work commemorating the Anzac spirit, will speak while at Nyah.

The service will be emceed by students from Nyah District Primary School and Swan Hill RSL sub branch president Barry Townley said it was important to include the younger generation in Anzac Day services.

“This is the eighth or ninth year we’ve got the schools involved — that never used to happen” he said.

“(Services) were dwindling but we met with the schools and got them involved.

“We’ve never looked back.”

This year is a significant occasion for the RSL, with the organisation marking 100 years since its inception.

Mr Townley encouraged all Swan Hill residents to attend an event and head along to the RSL afterwards.
