TWO federal policy overhauls, one of which has already passed parliament, will have a positive effect on both the supply and selling sides of local growers’ businesses, the Mallee’s federal representative says.
Last week, the Federal Government approved changes to misuse of market power provisions in the Competition and Consumer Act (CCA) and announced a review into the ‘backpacker tax’ increase that’s been vehemently opposed by local fruit producers.
Member for Mallee Andrew Broad said both actions were significant for the local horticultural industry, impacting on both its supply and sales sides.
He said the CCA reforms, both resulting from recommendations of last year’s Harper Competitor Policy Review, were a “game-changer” and would help stop larger corporations from using their market power to drive down prices and undercut smaller businesses.
