Boga’s barking bird

YOU may have seen an elephant fly, but have you heard a magpie bark?

That’s the question that left tourists at Lake Boga Caravan Park scratching their heads this week as a cheeky black and white visitor growled, barked and yapped at passers-by

The mimicking magpie appeared totally at home at Lake Boga, home of the Magpies football team, stealing the hearts of the many caravan park goers who gathered to watch his noisy antics.

He happily hopped onto offered arms and perched on heads.

“He turned up here on Saturday but locals have seen him around on Friday,” said caravan park owner Jason Stevens.

“He’s a good tourist attraction.”

Caravan park visitor Pip West from Woomelang said despite the magpie’s canine tendencies, the friendly bird took no notice of her two dogs, being more interested in the humans around him.

“When you’re talking to him he looks like he’s listening to you,” she said.

“He watches television, he takes in a lot.

“He’s not averse to walking into caravans — whenever he sees people he goes in for a visit. When the wild magpies chase him he hides under an awning.”

“Somebody might know where he comes from but we’re bamboozled,” said Echuca’s Brendan Hassall.
