More merger details emerge

THE New South Wales Government has finally released further details about its merger proposal for Murray and Wakool shire councils, saying it will implement a consultation process over the coming month.

As part of its Fit for the Future reform process, the government last month outlined plans to reduce the number of regional councils from 109 to 87, which included a proposal to merge Murray Shire and Wakool Shire councils.

The Office of Local Government closed its doors for the Christmas break soon after releasing the Fit for the Future proposals, leaving the two councils in the dark about why they were chosen to merge.

The full detail was finally provided in a formal merger proposal published on the Boundary Review website this week.

“The creation of this new council will bring together communities with similar expectations in terms of demands for services, infrastructure and facilities,” the proposal report read.
