Dark magic journey captivating

Mistress of Amber and Flame

Author – Maria Linwood
Review by Caitlyn Reilly

I am a person who adores a developed world and a great story, add in an interesting magic system and I am hooked.

This story ticks all the boxes.

Linwood creates a world of intrigue, following a mission with deadly stakes and discoveries that will leave readers reeling.

This story follows Tábala (Tah-ba-la) as she delves into the darkness that is her world.

Torn apart by magic long forgotten, her kingdom now has a rift, separating the lands.

Tábala is chosen to be a guardian, banishing nightmares seeping into her world of peace from the land of torment.

She is a force to be reckoned with, showing her strength and bravery over and over again throughout the whole book.

She meets Lar, who is destined to be her enemy.

He has travelled from the other world, filled with gloom and dark entities, trying to find a way to free his people and bring down the rift separating their worlds, but in doing so, he is placing her world in danger.

Lar is drawn to Tábala as she banishes the nightmares he has spread in her world despite all the stories from both of their histories making them believe they are nothing but enemies, both cannot help but be drawn to each other.

They embark on a mission that was full of twists and turns, mistrusting people and deadly creatures, that will leave readers guessing if they will betray each other or learn to work together.

The journey they take is full of action that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

I did not want to put it down for even a second, I kept second guessing everything and everyone, with so many possibilities of betrayal, it’s hard to trust anyone.

I adore a well-done magic system, and this one fascinated me to no end.

The magic is not light and easy, instead it is dark and gritty, bloody and demanding which takes just as easily as it gives. It is done in a way that will keep readers intrigued as more is learnt along the way.

If you’re after a new fantasy to sink your teeth into with a little romance and some great tropes I recommend picking it up and exploring this world yourself.

4/5 Stars.
