SWAN Hill Junior Fire Brigades came home from the Greater Midlands Fire Brigades’ Australia Day Weekend Championships competition with excellent results.
The Swan Hill A sides finished first in the Under 17 competition and sixth in the Under 14s, out of around 20 teams.
The Under 17s finished on 46 points, three ahead of second-placed Tatura, after grabbing top two spots in six of their nine events, finishing on top of the scoring in four of them.
Meanwhile, the Under 14s polled 7 points after finishing in the top two in two of their events.
To top the positive results off, Under 17 team member Jacob Pitts won the Australia Day Medal, awarded for best individual performer in the Under 17s.
Team coach Harold Jochs said it was a great team effort that allowed Pitts to do so well.
“It’s a team sport, but while the team’s success was a team effort, Jacob Pitts managed to win the Australia Day Medal,” Jochs said.
“But it wouldn’t have been if it wasn’t for the way he was supported by the whole team.”
Jochs was also impressed by the performance of his Under 14s side.
“It was a great result to finish 6th for such a young team that’s still developing, it’s absolutely fabulous.”
Attention will now be turned to the state championships in Horsham on the weekend of February 21 and 22.
The teams will be competing against 70 others from all across Victoria, and one from WA.
