A MALLAN family had reason to smile after the Moulamein Cup on Saturday.
The Jane Duncan-trained and Fiona Matheson-bred mare Why Mallan looked anything but a winner as it turned for home at the iconic local event, with the mother and daughter duo giving up on their seven-year-old star.
But despite the odds, Why Mallan, ridden by Lee Smith, found something to surpass the rest of the field and salute in the 1600m Lipp’s Moulamein Cup.
For Duncan, the win and that of Queen Of Ultima in the third, provided a thrilling first at her annual home-town meeting.
“It’s the first time I’ve won a race there, and we got the double and won the cup,” she said.
“We weren’t expecting it but it was a great thrill.”
