McPhee to step aside as mayor

AFTER two years at the helm, Swan Hill’s mayor Les McPhee is hanging up his mayoral robes.

Councillor McPhee has confirmed he will not be standing for mayor in the upcoming Swan Hill Rural City Council election.

Citing other commitments, not least of all running Swan Hill Police Station’s Traffic Management Unit, Cr McPhee said the time was right to step aside for one of his fellow councillors.

“I will not be seeking reappointment as mayor,” Cr McPhee said.

“Although I have thoroughly enjoyed the job, it is a very demanding role and I need a break.”

Elected as mayor two years ago, Cr McPhee was reappointed without opposition in 2013.

Now less than a month out from mayoral election, only one other candidate has expressed interest in the top job.
